Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai announced today (April 26th) that the Net Zero Institute received a Silver Award in the Climate Change - Sustainable Development category at the Green World Awards 2026, organized by the UK-based The Green Organisation. The New Zero Institute was the only organization from Taiwan to receive an award this year. Mayor Chen noted that, following the National Sustainable Development Award and the City Governance Excellence Award presented by Commonwealth Magazine in 2024, as well as this year's Green World Award, the Net Zero Institute has now received three major accolades. The New Zero Institute also unveiled a new lineup of second-half courses covering SBTi science-based targets, IFRS sustainability disclosures, ISO 46001 water efficiency management, and ISO 14001 environmental management systems, providing valuable learning opportunities for industry professionals and young talent.

According to the Environmental Protection Bureau, the Green World Awards have been organized by The Green Organisation since 2000 to recognize businesses, industries, and governments that demonstrate outstanding environmental practices. The awards are among the world's longest-running sustainability and environmental recognition programs. Through its diverse curriculum design, partnerships with international organizations, and emphasis on practical industry applications, the Net Zero Institute successfully earned recognition from the Green World Awards judging panel and received the Silver Award. The institute now joins sustainability initiatives from places such as Fiji, Abu Dhabi, and Gwangju in receiving international recognition.

Since its establishment two and a half years ago, the Net Zero Institute has delivered more than 230 courses and trained over 8,500 participants. In the industrial sector, it has provided 44 customized training programs for organizations including CPC Corporation, Taiwan, ASE Technology Holding, and the Taiwan Steel & Iron Industries Association. Within the city government, 90% of department heads have already obtained ISO certifications. By the end of July, the city expects to achieve its goal of having all section-chief-level officials and above obtain dual certifications in greenhouse gas inventory management and emissions reduction project implementation. The city government is also advancing its “One Department, One Carbon Credit Project” initiative, with 26 projects currently underway involving carbon sequestration, chiller replacement, biogas utilization centers, and other emissions reduction measures. Through the Net Zero Institute, the city continues embedding a net-zero culture throughout municipal operations.

Environmental Protection Bureau Director-General Chang Jui-hun stated that the Green World Award represents recognition of the efforts made by both the city government and the Net Zero Institute team. As ESG issues continue to evolve rapidly, the Net Zero Institute remains committed to enhancing its programs. In addition to foundational courses on carbon inventories and emissions reduction projects, third-quarter offerings will include certification courses on ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management Systems, as well as specialized courses covering the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard 2.0 Draft and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards. The Net Zero Institute welcomes members of the public and businesses to visit its website and participate in upcoming courses to strengthen their sustainability expertise and become part of Taiwan's growing green workforce.
